Why Telegram became slow in Russia in 2026

Since 2024, Russian and Iranian carriers have rolled out DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) filtering that recognizes Telegram traffic by signature and forcibly throttles its bandwidth. Symptoms every user knows:

🐢
Voice notes lag
A voice note takes 30–60 seconds to deliver, or never reaches the recipient. Especially bad on mobile carriers.
📷
Photos load for ages
Thumbnails open, but the full image hangs at 10–30%. Same on Wi-Fi and mobile data.
🎬
Videos won't play
Tap a video in chat — endless buffering. Wi-Fi makes no difference, your internet speed is fine.
📞
Calls drop
Voice and video calls swallow words, drop after 10–20 seconds, or never connect at all.
💬
Messages stuck
Grey checkmark instead of blue. The message is "sending" but takes 5–10 minutes to deliver.
Groups and channels frozen
Especially big channels and media albums. Feed freezes, new posts never load.

All five Russian carriers (Rostelecom, MTS, Beeline, MegaFon, T2/Tele2) apply schema-based throttling — the limit follows the traffic signature, not the port. Switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data does not help. Iranian users see the same pattern with national DPI infrastructure. Detailed throttling breakdown →

How our proxy bypasses the throttling

We use the telemt v3.3 server engine — a modern Rust implementation of MTProto proxy with Fake-TLS obfuscation. Your Telegram traffic is wrapped into a regular HTTPS packet that mimics a request to google.com on the standard port 443. The carrier's DPI filter sees a legitimate TLS handshake and lets the traffic through at full speed.

1
MTProto + Fake-TLS
Proxy traffic looks like an ordinary HTTPS request to google.com. The carrier's DPI cannot see Telegram inside.
2
Port 443
Standard HTTPS port that mobile carriers, corporate firewalls and public Wi-Fi cannot block.
3
EU-based server
Server in Frankfurt, Germany on an unmetered host. Low ping to Russia and Iran — 30–80 ms.

FAQ

?Is this really free? What's the catch?
The proxy is completely free. No catch: we run MATRIX VPN — a premium service with plans from $1/week. The free Telegram proxy is how we showcase quality. If you need a full VPN for YouTube, Instagram and other restricted sites, try MATRIX VPN with a 7-day trial.
?Why does your proxy work when others don't?
Most public proxy lists circulating in Telegram channels run MTProto without Fake-TLS — the carrier sees the signature instantly and blocks. Our server uses telemt with Fake-TLS on the standard port 443: the traffic is indistinguishable from regular HTTPS, the carrier can neither block nor throttle it.
?Will the server crash under load?
No. Our infrastructure handles 50,000+ concurrent connections. 10 Gbps uplink, unmetered traffic. Even if load grows, we will add load balancing. Zero downtime since launch.
?Does it work on iPhone (iOS)?
Yes, the proxy works in any Telegram client: iOS, Android, Telegram Desktop (Windows/macOS/Linux), Telegram Web. Setup is the same everywhere — via the tg://proxy link or manually in Settings → Data & Storage → Proxy.
?Are you reading my chats?
No. By design, MTProto proxy has no access to chat contents — chats are end-to-end encrypted with Telegram keys. The proxy only forwards already-encrypted packets. We see connection metadata, never content.
?Can I use the proxy together with a VPN?
Yes. The proxy only handles Telegram, other apps are unaffected. If a VPN is enabled for YouTube or websites, the Telegram proxy keeps working as usual — nothing extra to configure.
?Where do I report problems?
Telegram bot (at)ma3x_vpn_bot or via the contact form at mtrxvpn.com. We usually reply within an hour.
